Part 10 Sebastian

Sebastian had spent most of the day in a daze. His thoughts were jumbled and confused.

“I may never forgive you, I don’t think I can love you anymore.”

Every time he stopped her words played in his head. He’d tried not to dwell on it, trying to stay positive and keep moving. He worked harder then he usually did, didn’t even stop for lunch. Cindy had still caught on however. She’d approached him and asked if everything was alright with Evelyn.

Evelyn never did like Cindy but Sebastian set that aside to usual female jealously. Cindy was a young accountant whom he was close to in the firm. She was just friendly and Evelyn being a typical female was suspicious of any females being friendly with him. Cindy understood, and even found it rather amusing. She made a point to avoid him whenever Evelyn was around which Sebastian suspected only increased Evelyn’s wariness. It was a shame really because they’d make good friends.

Looking at her though, Sebastian understood why Cindy might make Eve cautious. Cindy was an attractive girl with long soft brown hair with blonde highlights. She always wore it down which framed her slightly narrow face perfectly. Her brown eyes always seemed to sparkle with amusement but this time they showed concern. Placing a hand on top of his she leaned down and searched his features. This level of closeness was typical Cindy and Seb didn’t really notice anymore. As she leaned over her exposed bosom was dangling just below eye level but Sebastian’s gaze was fixedly on her face. Cindy was a modern woman and enjoyed wearing clothing that attracted men’s attention and today’s outfit was no exception.

“You look troubled honey, everything alright,” Cindy said in her rolling accent. Cindy was from Romania and her European accent made almost everything she said sound sexual.

“It’s nothing really, just something with Evelyn. I don’t think I’ll every understand women,” Seb replied despondently.

“You say that like we are another species,” Cindy laughed, “Women aren’t really that complicated. At least not all of us,” she said stroking his hand.

He smiled at her. Cindy was always supportive and encouraging and he was glad of her friendship. She was always there to cheer him up, but today, he didn’t think even William could dig him out of this rut.

“I don’t know… I did something that hurt her. I guess it’s understandable that she would feel bad about it. I don’t know what I was expecting from it even after ‘that’, but it certainly wasn’t this,”

“Wasn’t what? What did she do to you?” Cindy asked.

“She..,” he began.

Massaging him she looked into his eyes and asked him, “Do you want me to,” slightly inclining her head down.

“She..,”

Straightening up she looked at him with unfeeling eyes so devoid of emotion and utterly empty she looked inhuman. She continued to stare right through him like he was nothing as she raised a hand to wipe her mouth and then she said in a voice as cold as ice.

He stopped for a moment as her words rang in his mind again. He shut his eyes against the memory and opened them again to see Cindy watching him carefully. Her eyes were filled with concern.

“I don’t even know where to begin. It’s complicated. Don’t think I can explain in words,” he said finally.

She continued to look at him her thoughts a mystery to him.

“Just hold in there bub,” She said finally giving his hand an affectionate squeeze.

They were both quiet for awhile and Sebastian was glad for the company and somehow just by being there for him Cindy was helping soothe his troubled thoughts.

“You need to find a girl that appreciates you,” She said finally, “Someone that’s right for you,”

“Evelyn is the right one. You don’t know her like I do. She’s definitely the one for me you know? Even with all that’s happened I still can’t imagine being with someone else,” he said.

“If you say so,” she said harshly, “Well, I better get back to my desk,”

For whatever reason Evelyn didn’t like Cindy, Cindy seemed to share that dislike of Evelyn. Females were naturally competitive especially when it came to males and Sebastian supposed Cindy just wanted to see her friend happy.

‘I wonder if she would still think highly of you if she knew what you did,’ a voice inside him said.

Suddenly, Sebastian felt crushingly guilt ridden. He felt smothered by disgust at his own selfishness. The wave of nauseousness slowly gave way to a rising anger directed at his stupidity.

‘YOU FUCKEN CHEATED ON HER!! Never forget that. That’s what you should feel like shit over!’ his screamed in his mind.

“I may never forgive you,”

‘And so she shouldn’t. I should be thanking god that she didn’t just dump my ass right then and there but no…’

He let out a frustrated sigh.

Those eyes, so cold, so empty.

His heart skipped a beat at the memory and a new wave of depression swept in. He may have deserved it. But, he didn’t think Evelyn, HIS Evelyn was really that cold hearted. He remembered those eyes filled with affection looking at him with profound love.

The ocean stretched out before them for countless miles where finally it blended into the horizon with a warm orange glow from the setting sun. The sun streaked across the sky and ocean alike and the two of them, alone on the yacht watched with silent awe. The salty summer air still held its warmth but he was still thankful for the warm caress from the soft skin of her back against his chest. She leaned back against him so that she could rest her temple against his neck as he enclosed her in his arms.

He couldn’t imagine a more perfect moment. He couldn’t imagine a more perfect woman.

“I love you,” he said perfectly aware at how corny it sounded in their current situation and not caring.

Pulling out of his embrace she turned to face him with a coy smile on her face but seeing the seriousness of his expression she thoughtfully bit her lip before smiling tenderly at him. Her loose golden hair shimmered as it stirred in the light breeze and her blue eyes, the most perfect blue deeper then the ocean behind her stared at him with an unwavering certainty that made his knees weak. She looked like a movie star, like a goddess.

“I love you now and forever,” Evelyn said.

The bitter sweet memory stang his heart but he held onto it closely guarding that feeling of being loved even as much as it hurt him right now. He used his own self disgust to harden himself against feelings of depression and forced himself to think clearly.

‘She said she’ll stay with me,’ he thought to himself. ‘Even if it hurts right now. Even if it’s difficult I will endure and I’ll do whatever it takes to make it up to her.’

He leaned back in his chair his eyes on the ceiling without really seeing what was before him. He breathed in deeply as he tried to organise his thoughts.

“Time Heals All Wounds,” he whispered to himself.

He just wished time would speed up.
