Dealing with Loss

She looked down on her child without feeling. The lifeless form resting at her feet was mocking her emptiness, mocking her lack of humanity. She thought about cleaning it up. The mess was everywhere. The blood was soaking into the floor boards. She wondered how this will affect the property value.

The gun itself will probably be taken away. She held the cold steel in her hand. It felt heavy and obsolete. Strange, that something so small could do so much damage. Her husband will probably be mad at her. He liked his gun, said every family needs protection and insisted it would protect them all. She looked down at the corpse on the floor.
“Some protection,” she said to herself.

The sound of her voice shocked her. It wasn’t until then she realized how quiet it was. With little Cody dead on the floor it wasn’t surprising how quiet the house was. After that gun shot, she’d heard nothing but the beating of her own heart. She ran her fingers across the trigger where his little fingers were clasped moments before.

The action awoke feelings, annoyance. They’d told Cody it was not a toy. He didn’t listen. He never listened. Doesn’t matter where they hid it, somehow, Cody would always find the gun.
How did he even load it?

TV perhaps.

She was against hitting children. So, every time they’d catch him, she’d give him a lecture. He never seemed to pay attention to her lectures anymore and their increasing frequency was becoming tiresome. She won’t have to punish him anymore.

It felt strange, being angry at him when she should be upset.

She knew that would come later. She felt it building up, like a tidal wave in the darkness. A feeling of foreboding that hung heavy in the air. She didn’t want to face those feelings and looking at the gun in her hand, she made a decision that came a little too easy.

What’s one more body?

The West Australian.

The citizens of a quiet street in Rockingham were shocked today when a police discovered the bodies of a young mother and child late Monday afternoon. Police were called to the scene after reports of a gun shot was heard and later released a statement saying they believed the mother had shot her child and then herself using her husband’s gun. Her husband refused to comment and is being questioned by police. Concerned neighbours told reporters that they were a very normal family and they were shocked that something like this could happen.
